Day 27 - McPherson, KS to Abilene, KS -- 68.14 miles!

Hi Everyone!

Today was a great day! We started out about 7:30 am with fairly stong headwinds for the first 11 miles. After that, we made a left, and had sweet tailwinds that blew us along for a good 20 plus miles. Along the way, we rode through very small towns, and back to rolling green hills, and sites of horses. Hardly any more wheat or corn fields!!!! At nearly 27 miles into to trip, we hit the 1/2 way point of our route. Having done 1923.5 miles since June 7th!!! Posted is a pic of all of us at our half-way point (and cupcakes to celebrate!)

The weather here today was hot. When we were not in a headwind to cool us off, we could really feel the heat, and it was only a touch uncomfortable. We went through the small town of Solomon, and finally made it to Abilene, KS at around 1:30. Our first priority of course, was finding a DQ (dairy queen) for lunch! Afterwards, we went and took a tour of the Eisenhower Center and Museum. It was cool being in the house where he grew up, and seeing all the memorabilia of his. Along the way, we also passed a lot of "mansions," and these mansions were HUGE!!!!

We went and ate at the Brookville Hotel, where they have family style chicken dinners. What a change from eating at Montana Mike's for the past 3 days! It was all homemade fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet corn, and ice-cream! We all have to fuel up for tomorrow's 108 miles!

After dinner, I took a walk, in the heat, but very overcast area. It looked like it was going to rain. As I started to sit here to blog, a tornado warning and watch was announced on the tv, stating a storm was coming toward Abilene. I went outside with my camera, and that is when the tornado sirens came on. I took a video, and will try to post it here. If it doesn't go through, check my flickr account at flickr.com/photos/meiri-bikeacrosscountry/

I think I saw funnel clouds, but no real tornados. People who were driving on the highway pulled off, and came into the Holiday Inn Express for safety. I guess that is what you are suppose to do if you hear tornado sirens! Not go outside like I did and take a video!!! LOL!

Tomorrow is a long day. It is suppose to be hot! I hope this rainstorm will keep things cool for some of tomorrow though!

Still having a blast doing this! Everyone have a Happy Fourth of July tomorrow!

Adios! Meiri.
